A Simple Prayer to Start your Day

Sometimes we wonder how to pray.

When I first became a Christian I had no idea what a vibrant prayer life looked like. I learned to pray by listening to others and reading the prayers in the Scriptures. The Bible is filled with examples for us to follow so I thought I’d share a simple prayer of Moses today that not only is an incredible example of prayer, but I believe it can revitalize a stagnant prayer life.

Right after the infamous golden calf incident, Moses sought the Lord with three requests.

  1. The first thing Moses prays is to know the Lord.

Exodus 33:13a “Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight…”

When we seek to know Him more, our thoughts and desires begin to line up with His will for our life. We suddenly become interested in what interests Him. We begin reading His Word and discovering what an amazing God He actually is! The things that break God’s heart suddenly break ours. The plans and promises of the Father suddenly become our mission as well. Pray to know the Lord more today. If you are struggling, ask the Lord to teach you something new through the trials. Maybe the Lord wants to reveal something about Himself in a new way to you today!

  1. The second request of Moses was that the Lord would go with him. More than that, Moses would rather not go if the Lord’s presence was not with him.

Exodus 33:15 “And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.”

We need to pray this as we begin each day. Instead of just rushing off to accomplish our plans, do we take a moment to say to God that we depend on his presence and power completely?

How comforting it is to us to know that God is with us. Sometimes when we feel alone and discouraged, we need to be reminded like Joshua that… “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

  1. The last thing that Moses prays is to see the glory of the Lord.

Exodus 33:18 “Moses said, “Please show me your glory.””

What an amazing prayer! A few verses later we read that God allowed Moses to see His glory unlike anyone had seen before. Pray that God would be glorified in you today.

There is power in your prayers. Pray to know the Lord more. Pray for God’s presence to be revealed. Pray to see God’s glory. Those are three prayers that Lord wants to answer in you today!
