“Heart on a String” – Scott Summers

Hey Shiloh Family,

In the mood of the Palms series that we’ve been going through, Pastor Kevin challenged me to write my own psalm-like song to share with all of you. To be honest, this song has been a work in progress (even before the challenge) but I’ve since put quite a bit of work into it, and now I feel confident that this is the finished product.

The song is about being authentic with God. It’s a reflection on the Psalms in that it’s a longing for purity of thought and motivation in every aspect of life, knowing that God sees our hearts. The hook/chorus is a response to Jesus’ words in Luke 10:27 (referencing Deut. 6:5), which if lived out is the answer to the longing expressed in the rest of the song. Pretty straight forward but hopefully something that ministers to your heart.

Here’s “Heart on a String”…

” I sing a song to my King

All of my treasures I bring, oh

Nothings and failures, a fool’s offering

Just a man and his heart on a string

I’ve tried to be good all my life

“Righteous” attempt full of pride, oh

How Your heart breaks, all the tears You must cry

When you say, “It’s your glory, not Mine”

When you say, “It’s your glory, not Mine”

I’m alive, oh but sometimes the dead in me breathes

I can fight, but it’s only your Spirit through me

You say, “You don’t know the half of it”

Broken I fall to my knees

The truth, no it don’t aim to please, oh

I can’t hide with smiles, oh this heart that You see

Oh let mine be the life You redeem

Oh let mine be the life You redeem

I’m alive, oh but sometimes the dead in me breathes

I can fight, but it’s only your Spirit through me

You say, “You don’t know the half of it”

You say, “You don’t know the half of it”

Here’s all my heart, here’s all my heart, here’s all my heart

Here’s all my soul, here’s all my soul, here’s all my soul

Here’s all my mind, here’s all my mind, here’s all my mind

Here’s all my strength, here’s all my strength, here’s all my strength

I sing a song to my King

All of my treasures I bring, oh

Nothings and failures, a fool’s offering

Just a man and his heart on a string”

Sincerely,

Scott Summers
